The open-architecture math over ten years

The comparison you'll find elsewhere for this matchup is a ten-year cost model, usually built by an Axis reseller, showing cloud subscriptions costing multiples of an owned Axis system. The hardware-and-license arithmetic in those models is often fair; what they price at zero is the operating side: the server or NVR someone must own, drives that fail on a schedule, VMS updates, backup discipline, and the staff hours that stop being free the day the person who understood the system leaves. If you have a standing IT operation (or an integrator on retainer) those costs are known and managed, and an Axis build can come out cheaper over a decade.

The reverse mistake is pricing Verkada's license as pure overhead. It buys the absence of all of the above, plus a warranty of up to ten years, bundled support, and retention guarantees that don't depend on anyone remembering to check a disk. Neither of those is the "right" answer; they're different bets on who should operate your video system. There is also a hybrid: existing Axis cameras can be brought into Verkada's Command via the Command Connector, so a migration doesn't have to mean writing off a good camera estate.

Is Axis cheaper than Verkada?

Often on software, sometimes overall. Axis has no mandatory cloud subscription: Camera Station licenses are per-device (reseller street price around $163/yr for a Pro universal license), and streaming to a third-party VMS via ONVIF needs no Axis license. What that saving buys you is the responsibility for servers, storage, updates, and support. Priced with full operating costs, lean multi-site teams often land cheaper on Verkada; well-staffed single campuses often land cheaper on Axis.

Do Axis cameras require a license?

The cameras themselves don't. Licensing enters with the VMS: AXIS Camera Station needs a per-device license (Core for Axis devices, Universal for third-party ONVIF devices), and third-party VMS platforms have their own licensing. That's structurally different from Verkada, where every camera requires a Command license that bundles software, support, updates, and cloud backup.

Can I use my existing Axis cameras with Verkada?

Yes, and this is the hybrid most comparisons miss.
